about matthew murdoch & murdoch builders
i am not a native of the district of columbia. i grew up in vermont where i learned carpentry from local craftsmen while renovating old homes in the middlebury area. the importance of excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail learned from that experience remains a cornerstone of my work today.
in 1994, i moved to the area and began renovating and improving historic homes in washington d.c. architecturally, townhouses are quite different from old country homes in vermont. yet adapting older homes to modern lifestyles is the same across styles and regions. in any project we need to restore the basic conditions of plumb, level, flat and square. once this foundation is created, we can reorganize spaces to meet present and future needs while preserving and complementing the original character of the home.
plumb, level, flat and square -- it is impossible to overemphasize how important these qualities are as a foundation for any design. they are the most basic elements of craftsmanship -- the context of quality – and they are the difference between a good design on paper and a beautiful home in reality. when achieved in the context of a thoughtful, functional, and elegant design the effect is one of enduring quality. murdoch builders strives to achieve this on each and every project.
sincerely,
matthew m. murdoch
