The medicine cabinet is deep enough to store small towels and the floor is ceramic heated with radiant heat.
This marble top is supported by a cantilevered steel frame which is mortared into the brick wall behind.
The arch in this pass-through mirrors the original brick arch over the door/window combination that it replaces.
This addition is cantilevered over the loggia wall below. Radiant heat floors match the kitchen next door.
The frame for the landing extends beneath the cantilever, over the loggia wall, and is anchored directly to the masonry of the house.
Mahogany treads are laminated out of several smaller pieces, alternating grain direction and growth rings in each tread for maximum stability and strength.
Detail of custom monostringer stairs. Each steel subtread is mortised into the corresponding laminated mahogany tread.

Rowhouse Remodel
The overall scope of work includes new kitchen, bath, master bedroom suite, addition with sunroom & roof deck. Architect Michael Raye was able to expand the main level of the house without eliminating the backyard by cantilevering the new addition over a slightly submerged loggia area. An abandoned chimney flanked by two windows was right where we needed a wide open pass-through into our new addition. The sheer number of structural and fabrication dilemmas that we faced on this project and their precise and beautiful resolution make it one of our favorites.
